Amando Casado, a professional photographer and curator of the exhibition, discovered the work of Bernardo Alonso Villarejo following a visit to the museum in Bembibre, where some of his ethnographic photographs were on display, and a few years later at the Posada Real Chousa Verde in Vegacervera, where he came across a series of original photographs that particularly caught his attention due to their high quality.
Following this discovery, and recognising the importance of his work, he set about compiling and working on the negatives with the family’s consent.
Bernardo Alonso Villarejo (Bembibre 1906-1998), an amateur photographer, worked with the legendary Leica and Rolleiflex cameras, managing to express his personal reality and world through a photographic language that was very novel for the time.
Her social standing allowed her to experiment and delve into the world of photography, and although her personal output is not very extensive, having worked primarily in the 1950s, she left a notable testament to the excellence of her work.
A master of chiaroscuro, a great analyst of light, with highly crafted and descriptive compositions, yet at the same time featuring more subtle scenes that capture the moment. Interested in recreating scenographic spaces and in the expressiveness of gesture, as well as introducing effects that highlighted the scene, he delved into diverse themes ranging from the most intimate rural world to the activity of major European cities such as Paris, Rome, Venice or Lisbon; childhood and motherhood; the everyday and the spiritual; the importance of water as an expressive element, the sea and experimental series.
The exhibition is accompanied by a magnificent documentary by the Astorga-born artist Jesús Palmero, which brings together a series of interviews with family members, friends and professionals from the worlds of art and photography, providing a fine illustration of the significance of Bernardo Alonso Villarejo’s work
