Channel is a project by Christian García Bello, winner of the NUDO/KNOT 2024 call promoted jointly by the Cerezales Antonino y Cinia Foundation and the Instituto Leonés de Cultura of the Diputación de León. It is based on research into old river fishing traps to transform them into sound devices capable of recording the vibrations, whispers and memories of the water in the environment of the Porma and Curueño rivers. It is a project that listens to the landscape from the infraleve, that observes manual work as a way of thinking and that understands the river as an open score.
In its final phase, we propose a laboratory of experimentation and collective fabrication. To this end, we are looking for people from the province of León interested in participating in this experience where we will explore ways of making sound devices inspired by river fishing traps. It is not a technical workshop or a training course, but a shared space of attention, listening, manual fabrication and dialogue with the landscape.
For five days spread over two weeks, we will work with simple materials such as fibres, fabrics, wires or basketry elements, and with recorders and microphones, we will imagine ways of capturing the vibrations and whispers of water. We will build traps that do not trap, but allow the world to pass through them.
The laboratory will be led by Christian García Bello and will have the collaboration of the experimental audiovisual artist Juanma Lodo, who will accompany the last phase of the process.
