The peak of Las Cangas, popularly known as “Peña Galicia”, is a modest elevation located on the southern front of the Cantabrian mountain range, on the divide separating the basins of the rivers Torío and Curueño.
Geologically speaking, it stands out for the set of rocks from the Devonian period that make up its subsoil, in which events that occurred in the seas of the past have been recorded, such as, for example, the development of reefs or the existence of storms on ancient beaches. Peña Galicia also stands out for its geological structure, as it exhibits a wide concave fold generated by the forces of the orogenies. For both of these reasons, Peña Galicia is included in the list of Places of Geological Interest of national importance.
On the other hand, despite its low altitude, Peña Galicia offers spectacular views of a large part of the León Mountains; its summit is easy to reach and it is not necessary to have much experience in mountaineering or to have specific equipment.
