Steppe birds
This year, we will delve deeper into the knowledge of birds that have adapted to living in agricultural landscapes resulting from human activity. Students already initiated in Ornithology (especially former students) will learn how some bird species have managed to adapt to living in a humanised landscape, the agricultural steppe. Southern León is a prime example of this type of landscape, where some of the most unknown species of our avifauna live. Larks, Great Bustards, Lesser Kestrels, and many other species that will awaken our interest in an area “a priori” not very striking for birds but surprising once you delve into it. Come and join our new course “Steppe Birds”!

Identifying steppe birds: practical recognition exercises.

The annual cycle of the most common steppe birds in León.
Ornithological outing around Cerezales del Condado.
7th June. 5 pm to 8 pm.
Agro-pastoral practices and the conservation of steppe birds: the successful example of the Great Bustard.
Not everything is always compatible: the decline of the Little Bustard.
8 June. Excursion. (Times to be confirmed)
Excursion to the Lagunas de la Nava (Palencia) to enjoy the spectacle of the birds' breeding season. We will put everything we've learned into practice and gain first-hand knowledge of the conservation programmes carried out there by the Global Nature Foundation.
