Photo project on the closure of the mining sector in León

24 July

From 18:00 to 19:30

The following spoke: Cecilia Orueta, Mar Astiárraga, Héctor Escobar and Julio Llamazares.

Hollywood films always ended with that expression: The end (End). They were, in fact, the first two English words that many Spaniards learned. In the mining towns, where the reality was reminiscent of the atmosphere of the Western films that were so popular in the second half of the last century, the expression The end has entered the popular imagination with the epic and twilight halo of those films that told stories not so far removed from those of the Spanish miners.

This photographic work emanates from that cinematographic aroma of the defeat of a dream that the end of mining has left in the mining towns. A 150-year history has come to an end and what remains are the images of a film that is gradually turning into ruin and memory. It was made over the course of a year after the closure on 28 December 2018 of the La Escondida mine, the last one left open in León, and focuses on the mining territories of León and Palencia, two of those most affected by the end of mining.

The photographs are accompanied by texts by authors who over the years have written about the mine and the miners, as well as testimonies from the press and some of those photographed. As one of these authors wrote, landscape is memory and the memory of the mining that for a century and a half gave life to these territories continues to beat in these places and it is our obligation to preserve it.
