“REGIÓN (The Narratives). Changes in Landscape and the Politics of Water” is an exhibition based on a research into the transformations of territory caused by big hydraulic constructions. It pays special attention to reservoirs in the north east of the province of León (Spain)_Juan Benet Reservoir and Riaño Reservoir_, whose construction was completed 50 and 30 years ago, respectively.
The project is named after the novel Return to Región (1967) by Juan Benet (Madrid, Spain, 1927-1993), which serves as a conceptual starting point. Juan Benet was the engineer who built the dam of the River Porma in the valley of Vegamián (León, Spain). In his novel, he mythologized the natural and human space he was going to flood, thus representing the essential dilemma of these processes, which makes past and future; progress and memory, antagonists.
The exhibition, distributed along the walls of Fundación Cerezales Antonino y Cinia (FCAYC) and MUSAC, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León is composed of different types of materials. From pictorial works to archaeological remains, material from personal archives, press articles from that time, engineering plans, unpublished expropriation files, documentary films broadcast on television, hundred-year-old books on agricultural education, films, posters or photographs, besides the work of several important contemporary artists who have reflected on the topic.
Its aim is to gather in the present all kinds of narratives, with their lights and shadows, concerning this transformation: the institutional, political and journalistic narratives and other such as popular memories, or the literary, cinematographic or artistic narratives.
