Virxilio da Silva Cuartet

Past event
18 Aug 2012
Cerezales del Condado

The young guitarist Virxilio da Silva is one of the most consistent names to have emerged in recent years on the increasingly dynamic Galician jazz scene, especially the one that revolves around the Permanent Jazz Seminar in Pontevedra. It was there that he began his training in 2000 under the guidance of Paco Charlín and Abe Rábade, where he was their student for the first four editions. Subsequently, he obtained a degree in jazz at the ESMAE in Oporto, with Nuno Ferreira as his main teacher.

He recorded his first album as a trio in 2005 with S.0.S Trio (106 Underground St.), and in 2009 he released his first album as a leader, Odysseia, this time as a quintet. He is currently working with his new group, a quartet made up of Xan Campos on piano, Paco Charlín on double bass and Max Gómez on drums. Together they are working on a new repertoire composed entirely by Virxilio, where they explore the sonic possibilities of this formation. The group's style is framed within a current that we could call “contemporary jazz”.

Although strongly rooted in the tradition of this style, their music is also influenced by the latest avant-garde trends from both Europe and the United States.

In addition, during these years, Virxilio has participated in numerous recordings and performances as a sideman accompanying musicians of national and international renown such as Walter Smith III, Jonathan Blake, Marcus Gilmore, Ambrose Akinmusire, Derek Nievergelt, Paco Charlín, Javier Vercher, Aruán Ortiz, Abe Rábade, Perico Sambeat, Víctor de Diego, Raynald Colom, Albert Bover, Zé Eduardo, João Moreira, Carlos Barretto, Román Filiú, Juanma Barroso, Nelson Cascais, Bruno Pedroso, Arturo Serra, Antonio Miguel, Xan Campos, Iago Fernández, Iago Vázquez, Max Gómez and Jose Ferro, among many others..
