Perhaps now, as the snow disappears from the horizon, there is a chance that this natural phenomenon can be understood in its broadest perspective: symbolic, poetic, anthropological. That it can also lead to a kind of ethical and aesthetic interiorisation: in the manner of a spirit that acts as a catalyst of forces, capable of propitiating a powerful technology of observation, of interpretation of the event and its symbols and, within it, of its relationship with ourselves and our tasks. For we are all concerned by the question that echoes from Villon's medieval verses: Where are the snows of yesteryear?
En este conocido estribillo de una balada legendaria resuena la cuestión del lugar de las cosas cuando están sometidas al curso cruel y fatal del tiempo. Pero la nieve, en el fondo, no es solo un fenómeno concreto, sino una realidad de orden inmemorial: un hecho físico y mental, incluso también – y más que nada – del corazón. Es una certeza que sube a los ojos y que está ligada a la luz, la soledad, el frío o el silencio. En ese preguntar del verso de Villon resuena también un sentido libidinal, como un deseo de invocar esa naturaleza de nieve que gusta – ahora más que nunca – de desaparecer u ocultarse, pero que es signo soberano y magnífico de la existencia en tanto que acontecimiento puro de la naturaleza.
In short: we are interested in approaching the differential fact of snow as a fragile presence that was past and, perhaps, precisely as an immemorial principle, an uncertain sign of the future of the world.
