Adrian Mokanu

Adrian Mokanu was born in 1989 in Kiev. He studied music composition at the National Academy of Music of Ukraine and pursued his postgraduate studies in electroacoustic composition at the Centro Superior de Enseñanza Musical Katarina Gurska in Madrid. In 2019 he received the Gaude Polonia scholarship from the Polish Ministry of Culture, which enabled him to attend the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. In 2022 he was awarded a scholarship from the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris for an artist residency at the Casa de Velázquez - the French Academy in Madrid, and in 2023 he was selected as an artist-in-residence at The Green Room in Cologne, Germany. 

Winner of the 38th Young Composers Competition - Frederic Mompou International Prize in Barcelona in 2017, two years later he received the second prize of the 4th GMCL/Jorge Peixinho International Composition Competition in Lisbon. Furthermore, in 2021, he won the first prize of the 2nd Borys Lyatoshynsky Composition Competition in Kharkiv, Ukraine. In 2021/22 he was one of the composers-in-residence in the project ‘Postcolonial Recherche’ with Ensemble Recherche. In 2022 he received the second prize at the Mauricio Kagel International Competition in Vienna and the second prize at the XXXIII edition of the Premio Jóvenes Compositores Fundación SGAE-CNDM in Madrid. 

Festivals where his compositions have been performed include Warsaw Autumn, musikprotokoll (Graz), Rossi Fest (Belgrade), Dias de Música Electroacústica (Lisbon), VANG. Músicas en vanguardia (Madrid), Festival Mixtur (Barcelona) and Ukrainian Contemporary Music Festival (New York). His works have been premiered in different countries such as Ukraine, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Serbia, Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Brazil and the United States.
