The ensemble La Spagna was founded by Alejandro Marías in 2009, and adopted its name in honour of the popular melody which, under this title, was played incessantly throughout Europe between the 15th and 17th centuries. Depending on the music, usually between renaissance and early classicism, La Spagna can present very different arrangements, from a small chamber ensemble to orchestral and operatic productions with guest conductors.
La Spagna plays with original instruments or copies adapted to each period and style, as well as with historical interpretative criteria that help us to be closer to the music in its essence, as it was conceived by its authors. This does not have an archaeological purpose, but a purely artistic one, since the closer we are to the author, the more strongly we will be able to express the emotions and affections that he has transmitted to us.
The musicians who make up La Spagna are young professionals trained in the most prestigious conservatories and schools in Europe (Paris, Geneva, The Hague, Basel, Amsterdam, Vienna, among others), and are frequent collaborators with some of the most important orchestras, conductors and soloists on the international early music scene, such as Philippe Herreweghe, Marc Minkowski, Ton Koopman, Bruno Weil, Sig, They are frequent collaborators of some of the most important orchestras, conductors and soloists on the international early music scene, such as Philippe Herreweghe, Marc Minkowski, Ton Koopman, Bruno Weil, Sigiswald Kuijken, Hervé Niquet, Lucy van Dael, Paul Agnew, Enrico Onofri, Hiro Kurosaki and David Stern.
