Tomás Ocaña

Tomás Jesús Ocaña González (Málaga, 1999) studied Clarinet and Composition at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Málaga. He is currently studying for a Master's degree in Composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt (Germany), with a scholarship from the Fundación Málaga. During these years he has complemented his training in courses at national and international level, focusing on clarinet performance and analysis of contemporary music.

As a clarinettist, he has oriented the artistic practice of his instrument always looking for balance and reciprocal stimulus between technique and understanding of the musical text. He has participated in performance courses with soloists of the stature of Jose Luis Estellés and Annelien van Wauwe. He has trained with clarinettists Rafael García "Faly" and Carlos Gil.

He is showing particular promise in the field of composition, winning an increasing number of prizes and distinctions. He has completed his advanced studies with the composers Diana Pérez Custodio and Abel Paúl López de Viñaspre. He is currently being taught by Orm Finnendhal at the HfMDK in Frankfurt.

His compositional work is characterised by the embrace of diverse instruments and formations, the creation of an authentic and coherent musical discourse, the contrast of fragile and delicate atmospheres with tragic and overwhelming ones, the practice of quotation and the collageThe use of performance and the combination with popular music from other cultures.

Among his most recent awards, we can point out: 1st Prize in the III Composition Competition José Andreu Navarro organized by the C.S.M. of Málaga (2021); 1st Prize "Xavier Montsalvatge" in the XXXII edition of the Young Composers Award SGAE-CNDM Foundation (2021) or the selection as FINALIST for the I International Composition Competition for brass bands "Nuevo Competition" which celebrates its final on December 6, 2022. He will be composer-in-residence of Juventudes Musicales España for the 2022/23 season.
